Earth Day 2013 in and around Washington, D.C.

D.C. Cherry blossomEarth Day 2013 is all about climate change.  Perhaps a minor problem to several, “it’s already impacting real people, animals and beloved places.” Learn more about it and be a part of the change by participating in one of the many events planned in Washington, D.C. and its neighboring areas.

Union Station

D.C.’s Union Station has dedicated the month of April to the environmentally conscious. Throughout the month, various activities are planned — you can explore alternative energy options, along with fun science fair, an art contest, a green fashion show, a farmers market, NASA demonstrations, and a film festival, among others. Most events are free.

National Mall

Scheduled for April 22 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., a rain-or-shine event on the National Mall will feature interactive exhibits, renewable energy demonstrations, musical performances, and prominent speakers. This year, celebrity performances include Ron Holloway, The Chad Hollister Band, and seven-time Grammy-nominated R&B artist Ledisi.

National Zoo

The National Zoo has a free, family-friendly Earth Day celebration planned on April 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids will be able to create biodegradable plant pots made out of recycled newspaper and participate in giveaways.

Vibha DC Dream Mile 5K Run & Walk & 1K Kids Fun Run on July 29

Active in the DC Metro area since 1996, Vibha is a non-profit organization that helps provide food, shelter, health care and education to underprivileged children. Vibha has a volunteer network of 825 volunteers spread across 15 Action Centers in cities across the US and India.

The organisation is hosting the 8th Annual Vibha DC 5K Run /Walk & 1K Kids Fun Run on the 29th of July. All proceeds of this event will go towards supporting two NGOs –  Door Step School and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area

Paranormal Tours at Oatlands, Leesburg

 Situated in Leesburg, Oatlands is a 19th-century mansion that encompasses around 200 years of American history. Today it is a  National Trust Historic Site and a National Historic Landmark.

 During the last week of October, visit the stately Oatlands mansion for a guided evening paranormal tour where you are exposed to exciting ghost events and strange incidents happened at the property. Tours are offered every evening at 7 and 8pm. Reservations required.

4th Annual Northern Virginia Summer Brewfest, June 25 & 26, 2011

Free Yoga at DC Yoga Week: May 15 to May 21 2011

Yoga enthusiasts are in for a treat during the DC Yoga week that commences May 15, 2011 to May 21, 2011. For a week, D.C residents can enjoy yoga at all participating studios for $5 or for free.

To kick start the event, partake in a fun-filled gathering called the Yoga on the Mall (YOTM), near the Washington Monument, on the grounds of the National Mall on Sunday, May 15 between 1:30-4:30 pm. Led by talented instructors from participating DC Yoga Week studios, the YOTM is a free event that caters to yogis of all skill sets, including families and young children.

The Yoga on the Mall will feature live drumming by the Young Women’s Drumming Empowerment Project, Acro-Yoga demonstration and interactive partner class and Special Appearance and class lead by Shiva Rea, accompanied by drumming from Unified Vibrations.

Also, participate in the “Yoga Swarga”, the first Yoga Flash Mob in conjunction with the Asian Heritage Foundation on Saturday, May 21, 10-11 am at John Marshall Park. Bring your own mats and indulge in a series of self-paced sun salutations. Be a part of more festivities that includes cultural parade, craft activities, martial arts, interactive displays and more.
