The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum is planning a festival of activities — Welcome Discovery — to celebrate the acquisition of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Activities at the Center will kick off on April 19 when Discovery will be officially transferred by NASA into the Smithsonian’s collection in an outdoor ceremony open to the public.

Visit for an evening of dancing, cooking and fun. Begin the night at 7:30pm with a 30 minute optional ballroom dancing lesson in the Workhouse Gallery. Work your way downstairs at 8pm to our café area , where you’ll work side by side with your date as our instructor teaches the easy yet impressive techniques behind a menu of dishes designed to inspire the warm fuzzies every time! Students are welcome to head back upstairs after the cooking lesson and take another twirl until 10:30pm!

The Hub Theatre, a Fairfax-based, professional nonprofit theatre presents John & Beatrice by Carole Fréchette. This modern, urban fairy tale is set in a nearly empty room in Beatrice’s 33rd-floor apartment. She’s posted an ad declaring that a “well-to-do heiress is seeking a man who will interest, move, and seduce her.” She offers a substantial reward which lures in John, a self-described bounty hunter. When John climbs the 33 flights to deliver his proposal in person, the rules are laid out, and a battle of the wits begins. Carole Fréchette’s work is a masterful play about the delusions and truths of modern day romance.

North Virginia things to do in the weekend – January 20 – January 22, 2012

The weekend weather forecast looks grim. However, you have enough events to look forward to warm you up. Here are some ideas if you are looking to venture out.

Friday, January 20

Date night: Spend a leisurely night at the acclaimed, romantic French restaurant in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. La Bergerie participates in the Alexandria Restaurant Week offering a three-course prix-fixe dinner menu for $35.

Saturday, January 21

Music: Indulge in a musical night featuring Tom Chaplin, the Grammy Award -winning American musician, entertainer, singer-songwriter and storyteller. The solo concert will feature some of Tom’s musical hits at the Wolf Trap Barn. 7.30pm. $22

Food & Drink: Beat the chill with a cup of simmering hot soup, and wine next to a fireplace at Loudon Valley Vineyards. Click here for the soup menu. 11am. $12/person for glass of wine and bowl of soup, $2 extra for reserve wines.

Kids friendly: If we dodge the snow, head your li’l ones to Reston Town Center, where they can indulge in a skating session with Scooby-Doo, Tweety Bird, Cat in the Hat and more. 11am to 1pm Adults – $9.00/Children under 12 – $7.00

Family Friendly: Transport to a old-world storytelling at Bow-tie Cinemas, that features the classic “My Fair Lady” (1964) starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. $5. 11am

Date night: Visit Clyde’s of Tysons Corner for a casual wine night where most bottles of wine are value-priced. This is a perfect time to try something new, or indulge in your favorites. 4-9pm
